How to edit a Wahoo ELEMNT FIT file

Every ride on an ELEMNT, BOLT, ROAM, or ACE is saved as a .fit file, and the Wahoo app shares that same file with Strava and your other connected apps. The Wahoo app can edit the summary numbers it shows you, but not the file underneath, so a wrong turn, a spike, or a ride that died halfway still goes out to every app as recorded. To fix those, edit the file and upload the clean version.

Step 1: get the file out of Wahoo

From the Wahoo app (any ELEMNT, and rides recorded in the app):

  1. Open the History tab and find the ride. The filters help if it was a while ago.
  2. Tap the three dots in the upper right corner of the activity.
  3. Choose Share activity, then Download .fit activity.
  4. Your phone's share menu opens. Save the file to your phone's files, or send it to your computer by AirDrop or email.

If a ride hasn't shown up in History yet, check the Devices tab says the ELEMNT is connected, then pull down on the History screen to force a sync.

Over USB, from the computer itself: connect it with a data cable while it is switched on, not just charging. Completed rides are in the exports folder, named by date (YYYY-MM-DD-...). Windows shows the unit like a USB drive. A Mac needs an MTP app such as OpenMTP to see it.

On an ACE, BOLT 3, or ROAM 3, USB access is off by default. Turn it on in the Wahoo app under Devices, your device, Settings: both Allow USB access and Allow .FIT file access need to be on before the rides appear.

From Strava: open the activity on the Strava website, three-dot menu, Export Original. That is the same .fit the ELEMNT recorded.

Step 2: fix what's wrong

Open the file in FIT File Editor. It shows the ride on a map with every data stream on a timeline underneath.

  • Forgot to stop at the end, or started early. Drag from where the ride really ended to the end of the timeline, or from the start to where it really began, and press Cut. See crop a FIT file.
  • A section in the middle you want gone. A wrong turn, a cafĂ© stop with the GPS wandering, a lift in the car. Drag across it on the timeline and press Cut. The distance and averages are recalculated from what is left.
  • The battery died and you have two files. Open the first, press the plus button, and add the second. They join into one ride. The dead battery guide has the details, and it works the same for a BOLT as for a Garmin.
  • Heart rate or power spikes. Select the bad stretch and cap, smooth, or fill it with the fix tool. There is a separate guide for heart rate spikes.
  • A sensor never connected, but something else recorded it. If the heart rate strap or power meter didn't pair with the ELEMNT and a watch or second head unit recorded the same ride, open the ELEMNT file and add the other one. Heart rate, power, cadence, or GPS that the ELEMNT file has none of is filled in from the second file over the time they overlap. Nothing the ELEMNT already recorded is overwritten. For a sensor that only dropped out for a few minutes, fill the gap with the fix tool instead.
  • Wrong date or time. Set a new start time in the details panel and every timestamp moves with it. See change the date and time.
  • Wrong sport. A ride saved under the wrong workout profile can be set to road, gravel, mountain, or indoor cycling in the details panel. See change the sport.

Press Export to save the edited .fit file. Nothing is uploaded at any point; the file is read and written in your browser.

Step 3: put it back

Delete the original activity on each platform before uploading the edited file. Strava, Garmin Connect, and TrainingPeaks all reject a file that overlaps an existing activity in time. The duplicate activity guide covers the order that works on each one.

  • Strava: delete the activity from its three-dot menu, then upload the edited file from the plus menu.
  • TrainingPeaks: delete the copy the Wahoo app shared, then upload the edited file.
  • Garmin Connect: Garmin isn't one of the Wahoo app's sharing partners, so there is usually nothing to delete. Import the edited file on the Garmin Connect website. If an earlier copy is there, delete it first.
  • Wahoo app: to swap the copy in your Wahoo history too, delete the ride from its three-dot menu, then go to History, tap the + in the upper left, and choose Upload, then Upload .fit file. An uploaded file isn't shared to your connected apps automatically, which is what you want here, since you already uploaded it.

Worth knowing

  • Editing in the Wahoo app doesn't change the file. The app's Edit activity option changes the numbers shown in Wahoo only. Wahoo's own help says the unchanged .fit is what gets shared afterwards, so Strava still gets the original.
  • First-generation units and the 2006 date. Rides recorded from August 17, 2025 on an original ELEMNT, BOLT 1, or ROAM 1 that hadn't been updated may be saved with a date in 2006, and sit at the bottom of your Wahoo history. Filter History by year to find it, download the file, and set the real start time in the time tool. Wahoo notes that the GPS track from those rides can also be off, and that part can't be fully recovered.
  • Auto-sharing can create the duplicate for you. If the Wahoo app auto-shares to Strava and you also upload by hand, you get two. Upload the edited file after deleting whatever Wahoo already sent.
  • Relabeling the device. If you rode with a borrowed BOLT or want the ride filed under a different unit, the device tool changes the manufacturer and model and leaves the data alone.
Open the editor Try it on a sample ride Free, and nothing leaves your browser.
